We Are Unitarian Universalists

We are brave, curious, and compassionate thinkers and doers. We are diverse in faith, ethnicity, history and spirituality, but aligned in our desire to make a difference for the good. We have a track record of standing on the side of love, justice, and peace. We have radical roots and a history as self-motivated spiritual people: we think for ourselves and recognize that life experience influences our beliefs more than anything. We need not think alike to love alike. We are people of many beliefs and backgrounds: people with a religious background, people with none, people who believe in a God, people who don’t, and people who let the mystery be. We are Unitarian Universalist and BuddhistChristianHinduHumanistJewish, MuslimPaganatheist and agnosticbelievers in God, and more. On the forefront of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer inclusion for more than 40 years, we are people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. We seek to welcome you: your whole self, with all your truths and your doubts, your worries and your hopes. Join us on this extraordinary adventure of faith. Get involved!

Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote seven Principles, which we hold as strong values and moral guides. We live out these Principles within a “living tradition” of wisdom and spirituality, drawn from sources as diverse as science, poetry, scripture, and personal experience. As Rev. Barbara Wells ten Hove explains, “The Principles are not dogma or doctrine, but rather a guide for those of us who choose to join and participate in Unitarian Universalist religious communities.”
  1. 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  2. 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  3. 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  4. 4th Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  5. 5th Principle: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  6. 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  7. 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Town Hall Meetings on proposed changes to Article II of the UUA bylaws

UU the Conversation, a grassroots initiative of individual Unitarian Universalists, not affiliated with any UU congregation, fellowship, or organization is sponsoring four Zoom Town Hall meetings so UUs can hear and speak with other UUs. All are welcome. However, if you wish to participate in the discussion, make a comment, or ask a question, you will be required to turn on your device camera and speak directly to the forum.

Theme: What We Gain, What We Lose.

The proposed Article II rewrite has good new ideas that come with substantial modifications to the way UUs have been functioning.  This Town Hall will address what is gained and what is lost with the new proposal so UUs can decide if it represents the right direction for our faith.
  • Date: Wednesday, April 24, 2024
  • Time: 8:00 PM Eastern, 7:00 PM Central, 6:00 PM Mountain, 5:00 PM Pacific
  • Duration: 75 – 90 minutes

Theme: On Accountabilty

The Article II Proposal makes us “accountable to one another for doing the work of living our shared values.” For each Value we are asked to Covenant to act. This implies judgment. We would no longer be accountable to our own conscience, but to others. How does this call fit with our Universalist and Unitarian religious ancestry? What should we expect from ourselves and our congregations to fulfill this call to action? What could we learn from recent UUA actions?  What are the pitfalls?
  • Date: Saturday, May 11, 2024
  • Time: 2:00 PM Eastern, 1:00 PM Central, 12:00 Noon Mountain, 11:00 AM Pacific
  • Duration: 75 – 90 minutes

Theme: Getting Ready for General Assembly

General Assembly will be entirely virtual, this year.  How does that work?  It’s June, already, can I still be a Delegate? (Maybe) If I’m not a delegate, can I participate? (Yes) Will there be an opportunity to “chat” with delegates and other participants? (Yes.) Join us as experienced delegates tell us what to expect.
  • Date: Saturday, June 1, 2024
  • Time: 3:00 PM Eastern, 2:00 PM Central, 1:00 PM Mountain, 12:00 Noon Pacific
  • Duration: 75 – 90 minutes

REV. TINA’S WEEK

This past Wednesday morning we hosted the Cochise Network Breakfast at Sky Island.  For more than thirty years, non profit agencies in Cochise County have met to share information about how they help the wider community.  I was able to connect with several people who might link me with resources and knowledge the next time we need to walk through a challenging time with someone in church or in the wider community.

Tina’s Office Hours

My office hours will be on the usual day next week, but a bit shorter due to an appointment: Tuesday, April 30, 12:00 – 2:00pm.

Of course I can meet with you another day of the week as well. Please call or text to set up a time beforehand so you won’t have to wait.

_______________________________

ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

All members are encouraged to attend our annual congregational meeting after church on April 28.  The agenda includes voting on bylaw changes, as well as the usual votes on board and nominating committee members and approval of the budget for the fiscal year starting July 1.

_______________________________

Mindfulness Meditation

Come for mindfulness meditation each Tuesday from 11am – noon at the church.  We take turns leading it, but don’t feel that you have to.

Come and try it out, no experience necessary.

Wondering Wednesdays

Come join us for Wondering Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. (local time) on Zoom, where we are always wondering how everyone is doing, and catch up on the latest in the SIUUC Community. Feel free to pop in on the rest of us for some friendly conversation and maybe a chuckle or two.

Second Collection for April

 For April, the second collection will be for the Emergency Assistance Fund (EAF).  You can donate at the second collection on April 28, or by tapping the DONATE button below. When you get to the part that says, “Use this donation for…” type in “2nd collection” . You can also drop a check off at church and leave in the Treasurer’s file folder on the wall, or mail a check to the address at the bottom of this webpage. Be sure to put “2nd collection” for the notation or memo.

Caring Corner

♥️

The Memorial Service for Alice Eastus will now be Saturday May 18 (instead of the 11th) at 1:00pm at the church.

Re-organizing Care Groups

Helping each other in our congregation becomes more important as friends and family move away. On Wednesday, January 24 from 12:30 – 2:00pm, bring your suggestions to a discussion on ways everybody can help. A printed summary of the discussion will be available on Sunday, January 28 after church. If you can’t come, call Diane or Joyce so your comments can be included in the printed summary.

If you have a joy you’d like to share or a sorrow you’d like people to hear, please send an email to skyislandchurch@gmail.com

Recurring ZOOM Links

For all Zoom meetings, if you need to call in by phone, you can call 1-253-215-8782.  The meeting ID is the last 11 digits of the corresponding link.
If you are a Zoom user, and it’s good to see some of you on Sunday mornings or on one of our various topical meetings, please check for updates. When you open Zoom, somewhere on your screen there should be a zoom.us entry. For me, it’s on the very very top of my screen on the left.  When you click on that, there should be a drop down menu with a number of options. One of them should say “Check for updates…..” and that’s what you want to click on. Since Zoom seems to have an update almost every week, you might be a bunch of weeks behind. Let’s all get current!
